Refresco Stand
Refresco Stand
2012

A one night only activation of a site-specific installation at SOMA in Mexico City, Mexico.

An actor was hired to fulfill the role of wait staff at the Estudio Aperto at SOMA. Instead of waiting on visitors to the exhibition the actor was requested to assume the persona of a 'refresco' (drink) vendor and man a pared back version of a 'refresco stand', commonly seen in public spaces and on the streets of Mexico City. The actor was immediately visible (both visually and audibly) to the public in the art institution setting, unlike the wait staff usually employed in these sites for opening events. However, the actor was largely ignored by the audience, in much the same way that his 'real life' counterparts are ignored on the streets of the city by the city's inhabitants.

Steel, tarp, lights, wood, Mexican oil cloth, hand painted signs, various Mexican soft drinks, bottled water, ice-bucket, hand chipped ice, found crates
